The Abbey Road Open Space is hidden away amongst the housing developments to the west of the A283 Steyning by-pass and is probably unknown to many of Steyning’s residents. Left largely unmanaged for the last 20+ years, apart from routine grass cutting and essential tree maintenance, the site has gradually matured into a rich and varied natural space. Over time, this has allowed a surprising range of habitats to develop, including chalk stream, wet woodland, ditch, pond, meadow, hedgerow and scrub.

Whilst none of these habitats are extensive in their own right, together they form a valuable and diverse ecological mix that is increasingly important for wildlife and biodiversity in this part of Steyning. The Abbey Road Projects bring together a range of community and environmental initiatives designed to protect, restore and gently enhance this special open space. From pond restoration and habitat management to tree planting, hedgerow creation and orchard proposals, the aim is to improve biodiversity, support local wildlife and preserve a much-valued green space for residents to enjoy, now and for future generations.
